2014 Annual Summary of International Research Institute for Multidisciplinary Science
The past 2014-2015 of the International Research Institute for Multidisciplinary Science (IRIMS) at Beihang University has been a year of achievements that defines the direction in which the institute is heading. The IRIMS has been actively boosting the construction of internationally recognized academic standards while trying to create an open, highly competitive yet cooperative academic eco-mechanism under the guidance of Beihang University Science and Technology Standing Committee.
Targeting top quality research at international academic frontiers, the IRIMS has preliminarily established several long-term strategic research themes including mechanics in aeronautics&astronautics, advanced material and nano-manufacturing, advanced information science and technology, new energy and environmental science, as well as life sciences and modern medicine, with the mission of attracting top caliber scholars globally and developing world-leading research hubs exploring fundamental scientific discoveries and pushing the bounds of research further beyond.
The newly established Fert Beijing Institute, together with Center for Integrated Computational Materials Engineering, Center for Space Environment Science and Technology, and International Research Center of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, brings the total number of internal research centers to eleven. The IRIMS has made rapid development with more than one hundred full time researchers including two Nobel laureates and six academicians overseas. With research centers as hubs for international collaboration, scholars from overseas are playing an increasingly important role in international cooperation and exchange, which promotes interaction and integration of global talents with Beihang University campus culture.
In 2014, with Beihang University as first author’s affiliation, a number of top level research results have been published in some of the most reputable journals such as Nature Communication and Physics Review Letter, etc., which attracts the attention of international scholars seeking research collaborations and renders Beihang University an emerging brand of academic excellence. In the same year, the International Research Institute for Multidisciplinary Science has won approval to establish the joint laboratory of international cooperation from the Ministry of Education in conjunction with related offices, schools and institutions of Beihang. And the International Research Institute for Multidisciplinary Science will continue promoting the quality of advancement and development on the basis of strong facilities and services.
Having gradually created a healthy and competitive academic eco-system featuring fundamental research and international collaboration, the IRIMS will continue to leverage the world-class research scholars and develop partnerships with international research communities, further promoting its research excellence and global visibility in the long term commitment of implementing the talent programs and academic strategy of Beihang University in the coming years.
