Beihang University and Nobel Laureate, Professor Heeger Reached Agreement to Deepen Cooperation

Huibin Xu, academician, president of Beihang University, and Alan Heeger, professor, Nobel laureate in chemistry, chief scientist of the Heeger Beijing Research and Development Center, signed an agreement to deepen cooperation between the two sides on November 2, 2015.

In June, 2013, Heeger Beijing Research and Development Center was established at Beihang University. It is the first research institution named after a Nobel laureate in Beijing, and professor Heeger is the chief scientist of the center. Under the leadership of professor Heeger and academician Lei Jiang, dean of the school of chemistry and environmental science, after two years of development, the center now has a group of faculty represented by 4 experts from the Global Talent Program and 3 associate professors. Having initiated extensive and in-depth collaboration with first-class research institutions and scientists in the field worldwide, the center sets up a unique brand of international cutting-edge research cooperation at Beihang University.

Heeger Beijing Research and Development Center pursues strategic and basic research of foresightedness, firmly targeting major issues in environmental security and new energy to further expand research concerning innovations of organic semiconductor materials, device optimization, as well as interface engineering, and to develop a series of novel organic semiconductor materials with high performance and independent intellectual property rights. Breakthroughs have been made in high-mobility field-effect transistor materials, organic solar cells and non-fullerene solar cells, 9 high level papers of which have been successively published in international, peer-reviewed scientific journals such as Nature Communications, Journal of the American Chemical Society, Advanced Materials, Advanced Energy Materials, etc. The center manages national special project of International Scientific Cooperation approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology and is designated Beijing International Science and Technology Cooperation Base of Organic Optoelectronic Functional Materials and Devices (2014-2016).

President Xu highly appreciates Heeger Beijing Research and Development Center’s achievements, with his great expectations of the center’s future to be a gathering place for top talents and an extensive platform for scientific and technological innovations.

Professor Heeger thanks the support of the university and says he would further strengthen cooperation with Beihang, making efforts to achieve greater breakthroughs in scientific research, top talent introduction and nurturing, as well as international intellectual exchanges.

Dean Lei Jiang, executive vice dean Lin Guo, Party secretary Yanling Jiang from the school of chemistry and environmental science and relevant faculty from Heeger Beijing Research and Development Center attended the signing ceremony.
